Blog Assignment #15 (Final Reflection)

For the last C4T I was assigned Kim Cofino as my teachers blog this week. Her blog is called "always learning." The first post I commented on was about how her school was making a blended learning environment with the use of WordPress and Google Apps. WordPress is a blogging site and Google Apps are another way to keep everything organized as I have learned this semester in EDM310.

My name is Kimberly Lefferson and I am a student at the University of South Alabama. I am currently enrolled in EDM310 a class for future educators. I enjoyed reading this post. I have always loved using Google as a search engine but just this semester I have learned about its many other features. I love Google Docs! I have used them for many group projects and its a great tool when collaborating with others! I am excited to get out and use all these wonderful tools I'm learning about in my own classroom! I will be looking forward to reading more on your blog!

Then the second post I commented on was about how her school is trying to get an evaluation program set up to evaluate how their school is doing and what other people think they can do better! This post was great and they seem to be on a good journey and are very excited about it.

I think its great that so many people and big researchers have taken the time to help you in the process to start evaluating your schools programs. This week I was assigned to Mrs. Yollis’ class blog. Oct #10. This post was about her class was learning a new type of word problem. It was a great post. For this C4K I was assigned Esrah’s blog from 4th 5Th grade PT England School Auckland, New Zealand. His post was a story about his experience at one of his schools Immersion assemblies. He stated that "an immersion assembly was where each team of teachers had an item they had to act out or do something with." Like he said "his favorite team was the team his mom was on, and they rapped about the planets."

EDM 310 is a college course, microcomputing systems. It is a class for students who want to be teachers in the future. We learn about different ways to integrate technology in the classroom among other things.

Final PLN report

My Personal Learning Network has gotten so much bigger than when we first started learning about what a PLN was. I have recently added to my Symbaloo the website that was given in blog post #14 Technology and Education| Box of Tricks. This website has so much to offer and has a great resources tab that could be great for future educators. This website also keeps you up to date on the new technology and things you can do in your classroom with it. That is among many other websites and blogs that I have added on my journey through EDM310. I think that PLN's are great and very useful!

Blog Post # 14

I would like to start by saying I have already added this site Box of Tricks to my symbaloo! I think it is a great resource not only in itself but it has so many doors to other resources. This website has so many great ideas, and great things for you to do in your classroom. The video was something that I think could help so many teachers with their material they are teaching. It would definitely give it a little life, more so than it has already. I really liked the idea of using iTunes because I know that it is used by so many people. I believe its a great idea to be interested in what type of music your students listen to and maybe surprise them with a song is power point if it is relevant sometime. I know that would have caught my attention in high school. Another great thing that was brought up in the video was using interactive activities. We have learned about interactive activities in EDM310 and EDU301 when dealing with the smart boards. I have enjoyed putting together different games for all the projects we have had to do. The one thing I really like seeing in the video was how Mr. Picardo talked about using what the students already have their "gadgets." I think that if we give the students opportunity to use their own gadgets then they would not be so focused on texting their friends but also about learning how to use they phones or media players for an educational use. I really enjoyed this blog assignment and like I said before I will be using this resource in the future if not only to keep me up to date on new technology but also different things to use in my classroom.

My Teacher is an App

For this blog post I chose option #2. Which is to read this article My Teacher Is an App. I really enjoyed this article. This article is about how schools are changing. Students of all ages have many options of where to receive their schooling from of course with their parents permission. This article describes the full-time online schools, integrated online classes within in school classes and then just the regular traditional full-time in school. These online schools offer classes for students starting in Kindergarten all the way up through their senior year of high school. This article describes many advantages and disadvantages to all three types of schooling. They talk about how each school's students do on their standardize tests. This article taught me many things I did not already know about these types of schools. I think that kids need to have the opportunity to make friends on their own and learn social skills. I agree with having high school students required to take online classes to introduce what they are like to them. I believe that if they do require students to take online classes in high school at least one they get an understanding of how they work and wouldn't get stressed out if when they go to college with some classes only offered as an online course. I also agree that to each its own and online schooling is what the child makes of it in the end.

Missed Metaphor Special Assignment

I do not understand why I didn't get the metaphor. I kind of understood it wasn't really about "pencils", but I guess I didn't understand how to word what I was trying to say. So I'm glad to do this extra post about metaphors.
As educators I think we can review and teach more in depth about metaphors and make sure our students understand them. I think that when learning and teaching about metaphors we should use them very often. Not just teach them one week and then don't use them or talk about them. If they're used in a book or something and the students didn't notice or say I think that us as teachers should make sure to point it out to them.
I believe we use metaphors to make reading more enjoyable. Not only reading we use metaphors in daily life also. I think we use metaphors to make things more interesting.

I really think that this channel is very interesting and has a lot to offer us. This is another way to integrate technology in the classroom.

Part # 1 C4K #10 Mrs.Yollis' 3rd Grade Class

This week we were assigned to examine Mrs. Yollis' class blog. Mrs. Yollis has been teaching for twenty-five years. She is a 3rd grade teacher in Los Angeles, California. She has taught a variety of classes and has also taught fifth grade. I also found on her part of the blog Meet Mrs. Yollis that she is also a student. She just recently finished her masters degree in Integrating Technology in the Classroom. In Mrs. Yollis' class this year she has 22 students 11 girls and 11 boys.
The most recent post on Mrs. Yollis' class blog caught my eye. Skyping with Australia . This post is a great example of how to use Skype within the classroom. I think that was a great opportunity for both of the classes especially since it was the afternoon at one end and the other it was the morning of the next day! Another post that I enjoyed was the one I was assigned for this week C4K. This blog post was posted October 10, 2011. Bloggers submit word problems, This post was about Mrs. Yollis' class learning a new type of word problem and actually showing us how it is done. This post was interesting because it wasn't only Mrs. Yollis' class doing the word problems. Other classes from around the world were sending Mrs. Yollis' 3rd grade class word problems to solve.
Mrs. Yollis' class has had 2,746 visitors since the cluster map was put up in October of 2010. Our EDM cluster map tells us that we have had 48,860 visitors since January 2010!
I will definitely be looking forward to seeing more on Mrs. Yollis' class blog. I really find everything they do in her class very interesting and fun! I hope the school I teach at is this technologically inclined!

For Project 16, my group is going to do a survival kit for EDM 310. It will explain a few things to help future students of EDM310. We have met quite a few times and are getting everything ready. We have some great ideas we just need to make sure we have all the specifics and we are excited about the survival kit!

Little Kids....Big Potential
This video was great! It really makes me excited that kids that young are starting off with all this technology. Like Ms. Cassidy said "Kids and technology go hand in hand". I believe that is so true considering we have 3 year olds that are playing games on their parents phones and all. I think this video is showing us a great way of how Ms. Cassidy uses technology in her class. She uses blogging and Skype and even has a great class webpage for her first graders.

Skype Interview with Ms. Cassidy
This Skype interview was great. Ms. Cassidy talked a lot about how technology has helped her in her classroom. I think technology is a great aspect to schooling to get kids interested in coming to school. Its a new way to do all of the things you did before in school. With technology kids don't have to write they normally type, but writing still should be taught. Web pages and blogs are great tools to use in the classroom also. I will definitely have a class blog when I become a teacher. I like how Ms. Cassidy has a web page with lots of different learning games and links to sites to help her kids out. I like that idea of them knowing what to do on that one site and it has all these different places it takes you, so I will have to remember a web page also to use in my classroom. I think Skype is a great learning tool. I think its great that Ms. Cassidy's class has used Skype with a class in Alabama and did skits or something through that. Its a great tool for the kids to see other children their own age and how they do things in their classrooms too.

This week I was assigned to read Walker's blog. He is in period 6. His post is about why we had school on Columbus Day. He explained because Christopher Columbus wasn't the first person to discover America the Native Americans were.

Do You Teach or Do You Educate?

This video made me think about the meanings of teaching and educating. As the video showed us there are many different ways to define both terms. To teach is always described as you doing something to cause someone else to learn. To educate is like you being there for the student not only teaching them one subject but giving advise and guiding them along their journey letting them open their eyes to different views.
I really like the quote that was used in this video by Peter Brougham-- " Education makes people easy to lead, but difficult to drive; easy to govern but impossible to enslave." -Peter Brougham.
This quote says that Education makes the person who they are, so if they have a someone who teaches them and not educates that makes the difference in who that student becomes and what they do with their life. I became an education major to make a difference in many lives whether it be the students I have in my class, their parents or others in the community. I want to be the reason they love school and they are excelling because they are engaged in the material and are understanding what they are doing.

Tom Johnson's Don't Let Them Take Pencils Home!

This is a great article and I am glad that we got to read this blog. I believe Mr. Johnson is right and more often than not teachers fight the problem rather that finding the solutions. Yes, a pencil can be used as entertainment but if teachers were keeping their students engaged with what they are teaching "pencils" wouldn't be the issue of low scores on standardized tests. I think teachers need to stop trying to control what goes on outside of their classrooms and worry about what could keep the students attention. If the teachers are worried about why their students aren't doing the homework assigned they might want to change that up as well and make sure it is keeping the students entertained and engaged in the material. Although, I think writing to a pen pal and playing Hangman is a way of learning also.

I was assigned iLearn Technology for my thrid C4T.

This is a great blog! This blog is about all different kinds of new technology or websites that you can incorporate into your lessons and use in your classroom. It’s a fun way for students to learn and a way for them to understand with interactive pictures and audio. This blog has great information and ideas of how to integrate these sites into the classroom.

Oddizzi

Oddizzi is a great tool to use in your class when talking about geography and places around the world. You can also use Oddizzi for teaching about different cultures. Students can see the physical features and global features of places all over the world and it will give them information about each place and if they want to know something specific. With this website there are also fun characters that help students through the site “Odd and Izzi.” I went and took a look at this site it was pretty cool and looks like it would be really interesting to kids. I believe that this site can help teachers teach geography and get kids interested in how things are in different countries. This site you have to pay for but they do have a free trial to test and check out to see if you like it and all. I think it would be worth the money to help the kids learn using a different tool!

Draw A Stickman

This site is a great tool to use in Language Arts/English! It works with problem solving, story building, and following directions among other skills. This site is called Draw a Stickman. It is a cool website. I went and created a stickman and went through a whole story. It’s a good way to have kids list or find the parts of a story (the beginning, climax, ending)etc. It’s a great tool to get kids excited about writing/ creating a story. This site starts where you draw a stick figure and then goes through a few challenges and has you draw different things the stickman would need. It’s a great way to have kids work together and decide what they should do to help the stickman (problem solving).
I have bookmarked these different pages and I will have to remember to try and incorporate these tools into my lessons in the future as well as keep up with iLearn Technology’s blog!

What I've Learned This Year (2008-2009)

I have been inspired by what Mr. McClung has told us about his first year as a teacher. When thinking about teaching and getting into student teaching and such I think about how administrators and supervisors will think of me, but just like Mr. McClung said "its not all about you (as the teacher) its about the students and what they are comprehending." I also know that no lesson is perfect. Just remembering times in high school when teachers would be ready to move on to the next thing and we would have to spend more time on something maybe a little confusing the teachers would have to adjust their lessons to what us as students needed to work on more. Teachers definitely have to set high standards for their students. I believe this is a great teaching philosophy because this way the students know you believe in them and have faith that they can succeed with you helping them get there. I have learned so much in EDM 310 so far about all the new technology not only new things like computers, iPads, phones, but also about twitter and blogging lots else. Like making book trailers I feel that is a great thing to get kids excited about books. I believe just like we need to talk to friends and such, you students also like to talk to you. Students look up to teachers so much. Listening to your students mean so much to students also. I believe that there is no way to just stop learning. Without a doubt I learn something new everyday not just because I'm in school but in life in general.

What I've Learned This Year (2009-2010)

Adapting to anything is going to be work, but it seems like Mr. McClung has done a good job to adapt with moving to another school. It was a big change for him to go from teaching science a subject he knows well to teaching three subjects all in one year with two very new subjects he had never taught. It sounds like he did a great job of adapting. As I stated in the last post there is not a perfect lesson. We all as teachers will have to overcome the fact that some things just don't work out as planned and lessons are one of those things. It may not be every lesson but most of them. So we just need to learn to accept it and not stress about it. Manipulating the way and style you teach is a different aspect also that has to be worked on but once you get it and see that the students understand better it makes it all the work worth it. It is great advice that Mr. McClung gives us about "finding your school mom." It is great to find a 'mentor' that will be there when you need help and is there to guide you in learning all the things you need to know about your new school. I believe that teachers should not show or act like they are the best they can be. We are always learning something new and it shows our students that its okay to act like that. Students look up to teachers so much so that the way we act and show ourselves is the way they're going to think that's how I want to act or what I want to be like when I grow up. I think its a great idea to give students roles throughout the class. It does give them ownership and leadership qualities but it also gives them that respect of what your doing to help them learn and to be respectful. Being a "control freak" I believe gives off the vibe of let's act up and try and push the teachers buttons. Nothing ever goes perfect as planned. I haven't learned much about scope and sequence yet but since I have read this post and Mr. McClung said its important I will definitely be paying attention when this topic comes up as well as any other topic because our teachers are here to help us as well as we will be there to teach and guide our students. The topic of "not losing site of what's important" is a big deal. It is something that pushes me through school.

I had a friend that was talking about quitting school and I talked to her about it, and told her not to lose site of her goal to be a teacher. We talked about how she will influence so many kids and how they need great teachers to look up to. I told her that if she quit school that she wouldn't ever accomplish her goal to be a teacher and help influence and form any students. I believe that she is going to stick it out, and I am very proud because that is something for us all to think about when we are having a bad day or are just down. That if we finish and accomplish our goals to be teachers we will be influencing so many children and making sure that we teach them to the best of our abilities! As a student I am learning so much and am excited to get out and into my very own classroom. I am glad I read these posts about Mr. McClung's years of teaching it gives me hope and shows me it will all work out we just have to keep our heads high and do our best to give our students the best education.

This is How We Dream Part 1 & 2

Richard Miller gave a great presentation of what we have to work with these days and how we use our resources. It is true that most of the time now we barely use paper, pens and pencils. Now we use our computers to type everything up faster. It is also true that most of the books we use in class or even just books for free time reading can all be found online in some form or fashion. There are tons of books you can download to your iPad or computer and read and then there are also the ones you can download and listen to. Research has also been made a lot easier, in some ways. Most everything in the public libraries and also in University libraries can be found online. This makes it so much easier to access things from virtually anywhere and at anytime. There are many ways to make sure we understand different subjects and material, by watching other professors lectures. One way to find these lectures would be using a new tool ItunesU. Its amazing what we can see already that will be used and being created for the future. So many new technologies as well as now collaborating with the web itself. It's crazy to hear that actually is being done.

Blog Post # 12 by: Carly Pugh

When reading this post I understood what she was saying about making a playlist but I didn't know how incredible this idea was until I saw Carly's playlist itself. When thinking about Mr. Millers expectations of the new writing in multimedia it really does come close to compare. In this post Carly explains her teaching style or what she wants her philosophies to be as a teacher within using other peoples videos they have created. I think this idea is a great one. Sometimes when you can't explain how you are feeling and then you are watching TV or listening to the radio and you hear a song and it fits how you are feeling exactly to a T. It happens a lot to me. Its better to explain through others work put together as one. This activity puts a personal touch to your teachings and philosophies.

Chipper Series and EDM for dummies

These videos were really entertaining. I really liked both videos and thought about what difficult children would be like in my class one day or children that just didn't feel like it was necessary to do their work. I think Dr. Strange did a great job when it came to handling Chipper. I definitely thought about how I wouldn't want a child like Chipper in my class, but those children are the ones that bring you the most satisfaction when they realize that you were right the whole time and do know what your talking about. EDM for dummies was a funny video! I like how these videos have a humor to them and also get the point across very clearly.

Learn to Change, Change to Learn

In this video teachers describe how school is nowadays. These teachers describe the students using all this technology to communicate to one another, but how it is all banned from actually using the technology in the classroom. I know that it's getting better in how many schools are giving students computers and classes are being donated iPads, but if this is what the future is bringing I definitely think that they should be able to use all this technology inside the classroom as well. I believe its (us) as teachers that need to change our ways of teaching like all the videos we have watched thus far has mentioned that times are changing and we are going to be the teachers of "networked students." I also believe that it should not only be the teachers just changing their ways but we also need the parents cooperation. Their children will definitely be able to teach their parents something new everyday about all this new technology, but they need to have some sort of resources for their children as well. If everyone as a community works together I believe that the students will have many opportunities and have successful school careers.

Randy Pausch Last Lecture: Achieveing Your Childhood Dreams

First off I'd like to start off by saying Randy Pausch is so inspiring. I really like how he shared his childhood dreams and went through every one with us. He showed us exactly how he achieved his goals. I have found what he said about his NFL dream to be very true. "About if people leave you alone and don't tell you what your doing wrong "ride you hard" anymore then they have given up on you." I truly believe that the ones that love and care about you the most will push you the hardest because they want to see you achieve your dreams. I thought it was comical when Paush had the stuffed bears brought out to show for proof. When he got turned down by Disney he didn't get upset he just tried to think of different ways to achieve this goal. To me this is a quality of a role model. I like what Jon Snoddy said, "Wait long enough and people will surprise and impress you." From this video I learned it's okay to run into hardships it makes you stronger and able to do so much more in the end. I enjoyed what Pausch said about enabling others childhood dreams. It's inspiring to know as future educators we can help kids create or make them understand its great to have dreams and if they work hard enough they can achieve them. The projects and worlds that were made were amazing and so cool. I think its great that the "ETC" is going global. "Alice" seems really cool it sounds like its going to be a big hit and being educational is a great aspect! "NEVER GIVE UP" on of the big things that was pushed in this video along with other aspects to success. This video was long, but it was well worth the time to watch it. Especially since it was extremely inspiring if I haven't said that enough.

My PLN Post #1

For My PLN i used Symbaloo. Symbaloo is really easy to use and it helped me get all of my resources organized. With Symbaloo I can put both my favorites websites and pages I use daily together in one location. For my PLN I added the websites I use for school and those I have been visiting for EDM310 and EDU301 to my Symbaloo also. Some of these websites are Google, USA Online, EDM310 class blog, YouTube and many more. I may just be creating my PLN but it is growing with everything I learn and add to it.

The teacher I was assigned for my second C4T is Mr. Karl Fisch. "He has been a teacher for many years and now is a director of technology at a high school(Karl Fisch, About Me, The Fischbowl)."
The first post I commented on is one about reflective blogs in Algebra. Karl Fisch gave his students a writing/blog assignment their first day of class. This assignment was about setting goals for the semester. The three types of goals they were to set were: 1. A goal related to the class (Algebra) 2. A goal related to their semester in high school altogether and 3. A goal related to something outside of school. Then at the end of his post he encouraged his viewers to take a look at his students goals for this assignment. So I went and looked at some of his students goals they were pretty realistic goals they can achieve if working hard. I commented on this post stating that I was a student at the University of South Alabama and am currently enrolled in EDM310. I told him I think this is a great way to kick off the semester or the beginning of a new class with the kids making goals for themselves. It gives them something to work toward and see if they can accomplish their goals. I believe if more teachers gave this assignment out in the beginning of a semester it would give the teachers a better understanding of their students and see what they're willing to try and accomplish.

The second post I commented on was very interesting to me. This post was about a homework assignment his daughter Abby brought home. The assignment was one where she was assigned a certain country and had to find "interesting and relevant" facts about her country. Her country she was assigned was the Bermuda Islands. Mr. Fisch helped his daughter find some facts from websites they looked at pictures of Bermuda and also looked up its location on Google Maps. Mr. Fisch then states " Now, at this point, it's an okay if not particularly engaging assignment and, again, I don't know where the teacher/class is going next with this." Then he asks his daughter "if she would want to try and talk to someone in Bermuda and ask them some questions." Abby agreed, so Mr. Fisch sent a tweet out saying "My daughter is researching the Bermuda Islands for social studies. Looking for 10 specific, relevant facts. Anyone from Bermuda out there?" Within in a couple of minutes he had a reply from someone suggesting another person that actually lives in Bermuda. Then a few minutes later they got a reply from the person that was suggested(@Bermyguy). @Bermyguy asked "what do you need to know." Mr. Fisch and @Bermyguy agreed to a Skype conversation the next day. Mr. Fisch's daughter thought about some questions to ask Shannon (@Bermyguy) for the next days Skype. In this Skype conversation, which was posted as a video on Mr. Fisch's blog also in this post, Abby got to see what Shannon's house looked and sounded like and learned some very interesting facts. "Did you know that in Bermuda they collect their rain water for all their water needs?" So after talking/Skyping with Shannon, Mr.Fisch and Abby were talking about the how they use the rain water and Abby said "Wow, they must get a lot of rain." So when thinking back to the whole assignment I believe that actually skyping with Shannon had a bigger impact on Abby than finding her facts mainly from websites and seeing still pictures of Bermuda. It's great that others would take the time to help with a school assignment like this one! I think it was great for them to share the experience and I told him that I thought it was a great suggestion for the teacher.

The Networked Student

This video was so interesting and really made me think about teaching in the future as well as the few videos in the past we have watched. First I learned the meaning of Connectivism. I also learned that PLN means personal learning network. We have a PLN in this class, or I have started to create one with the many bookmarked pages and searches within different blogs and such. I think its amazing how learning is changing. This video was about a boy who didn't have a textbook whose teacher rarely lectured he only went to class 3 days and had online assignments to do the other 2 days. This video really made me realize that teachers of a networked student will be teaching the students of the future how to assess the credibility of websites and when they aren't facts but just opinions. Teaching students this we will be introducing a PLN, but they will make their own depending on what they are studying and what not. Not only can our students use computers and the internet for resources but also Ipods. Ipods/MP3s offer many apps that can support their learning. Asking NEVER hurts. If you don't know something then it is a good choice to ask and make sure that you know exactly what your doing is right. During this video the student created basically a textbook for himself with all of his resources. After all of this work and making his on PLN he uploaded his hardwork to a blog so others who need help with that specific topic can view his work and his findings.
*Why does the networked student even need a teacher?*
They need someone to teach them how to build this network and how to take advantage of their learning opportunities. The teachers want their students to leave their classes maintaining their learning network and use it for their futures.

A 7th Graders Personal Learning Environment or PLN

She made a Personal Page with all of her resources and social networks on so these pages would be of easy access. She made a Glogster also which is something new to me. I think its very interesting and will be looking into them some more. She stated that they use Skype for asking experts for help. This seventh grader also stated that using her computer meant there was a lot of freedom. They have the freedom of how to do it and when to do their assignments, but they have so much freedom that they feel the responsibility to do their work. She also stated that they have access to all kinds of resources from Facebook to other social networks. Although technology can be distracting when things finally get done they look neat. Her personal learning environment is much like my personal learning network. My PLN consist of all my resources needed for school but also includes my social network pages.

C4K Summary (September)

C4K # 1
For this C4K i was assigned Aneisha @ PT England School. She wrote about her experience with cross country. She wrote a story about how one day she didn't realize she had cross country at school and her mom made her go. She had to run and she didn't like running. I told Aneisha I enjoyed her story on cross country. I am not much of a runner either but when I was in fifth grade in our PE class we had to run a mile every now and then. I told her in my class we used to make it a competition and to see who was the fastest in the class. I encouraged her to keep up the good work and some times we have to do some things we might not want to.

My assigned kids blog for the week didn't accept comments so I chose to comment on another kids blog. Her name is Abbie. She wrote about visiting Florida and described why she wanted to visit there. She said was because she could go to the beach and a pier with an amusement park on it. I told her I was born in Florida and loved going back and visiting. I also stated I loved going to the beach also. I told her that I would be interested in keeping up with other posts she wrote and told her to keep up the good work.

This C4K i was assigned to the St. Elmo Explorers. I enjoyed the video. The children seemed to be having a good time making the video and creating their self portraits. I was assigned Dana for this C4K. I really liked her self portrait and her descriptive words about herself. I told her she did a great job and to keep up the good work.

About My Avatar--Amber
This weeks C4K the student I was assigned had to describe the Avatar she made for her blog picture. She described her avatar as resembling herself. She also described her likes and put her avatar in a warm surrounding because her favorite season is summer. I stated that she had described her avatar very well and that my favorite season is summer too. I told her to keep up the good work.

Don't Teach Your Kids This Stuff. Please?
This blog post was very interesting. It had a different format then other blogs. It was sarcastic and basically to the point. Some say it was confusing, but it the truth about technology. Technology is the future. This means that students need to being using technology to get them familiar with it. Although, I think students of the 21st century know all about technology and can use it better than their teachers and some teachers. I say YES to technology.

The iSchool Initiative
Watching this video i was astounded by how much the itouch can actually be used for strictly school usage. I think that this is an excellent idea. He is really on top of this idea and knows exactly what it is he wants to make a reality. He is conquering his goal by getting the support of others and making meetings with different affiliates with the Apple itouch and school administration. I believe that this will one day be a reality.

Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choir
This video is so cool. To know that all these people never met, but they are apart of 1 choir amazes me. I saw an instrumental video like this before in my intro to music class. I think it is so cool that this is able to actually work out and sound great. It definitely makes me think about how they are able to put all this together.

Teaching in the 21st Century
I really liked this video it makes you think. Thinking about this video I was pondering about how it would affect me being a teacher in the future. It seems to me that this video is saying that the teachers would be teaching the students how to apply different concepts, make sure they know how to validate the information and also problem solve with the information...etc. Right now students can find "anything, anytime, anywhere." Its totally made possible with all the technology that we have thus far. Thinking to the future that it is already true that "teachers are no longer the main source of knowledge." Now we have to change our teaching ways and teach them how to use the technology as long with trusting (validating) what they are reading online and such places. Teaching has totally changed, and I think for the better. We now have more technological resources being used at the students expense. I think its great.

Langwitches
This blog was incredible. I enjoyed listening to the podcast and reading along with them. I think that this is a great idea! Even with first graders. I think the podcast read-along would make the children more excited about learning to read and reading in general. It gives the kids something interactive to do while learning. Like the post stated the students started to learn about the way their voices sounded and wanting to redo the recording. I like how the students have a script to read along with, but I understand how sometimes they could get lost. I think its a great idea that they have the certain noise indicating they were moving on to the next chapter. I feel this is a great tool to use in the classroom and the students enjoy this method also.

The benefits of podcasting in the classroom
I really like the idea of podcasting in the classroom. It gives the students another way to study or have the advantage to keep up with what's going on in the classroom if they are out sick. I never thought about how the kids could keep up with the class when being out sick, but I really like that it's an option to help the students. I really think that I will be incorporating podcasting in my classroom in some way. Just like in Langwitches this teacher incorporates podcasts with books. Although in this podcast he reads and has other teachers help him by playing parts in the book. When listening to the teachers 'in character' I could hear the emotion. I feel the students stay focused and learn more if they can remember what was going on and I think that emotion in reading the book will stay with the children longer. The teacher also stated that the students went home and was explaining what the book was about to their parents. I believe that is one way to know that podcasting and the way that a book is read makes a difference. Parents always like seeing/hearing about what goes on in the classroom. Podcasting gives parents a way to see what goes on in the classroom other than just asking their children.

The Education Podcast Network
This is the first time I had heard about the Education Podcast Network(PEN). I have learned that there are many resources out there for educators on podcasting.I think its a great idea for taking the classroom to the 21st century. Its a great site to get ideas and help with podcasting. This site is also where other educators share their experiences with podcasts and how they found a way to teach with it and incorporate it in the classroom.

Peer Editing
Through my C4C's I have commented on what I liked that they posted in their blogs. I have done so with a positive attitude. I did think this video was very helpful and pointed out some other things I can do when peer editing. Peer Edit Perfection Tutorial is a great resource to keep and look back at when needed. Writing Peer Review Top 10 Mistakes was a great video to watch. It was very funny and entertaining which sometimes gets the point across more and you remember the examples better.

It's Not About the Technology
Mrs. Hines changed my attitude on technology. She has made me realize that "technology" isn't the most important thing being used and taught. It is how we used the technology to teach. I also learned more about how its not a one time education for teachers. I already knew that being a teacher is a lot of work, but keeping up to date information and technology is a big necessity. It's not what you have to teach its how you teach it. For example, even if you have all the up to date technology you need to know how to use it with what your teaching. I also learned that if a teachers students haven't learned then the teacher really hasn't taught. After reading this in the article I had to think about how that could be. I believe the statement and think that if they don't understand the lesson one way teach it using a different method whether that is with or without technology. This article's title says to me after reading it that it is not about the technology you have it is how you use it and that teachers know how to use it. I enjoyed this article.

Is It Okay to Be A Technologically Illiterate Teacher
When just reading the title of this post I was thinking about the questionnaire we took the first week of class. It had a question just like this in it. I thought about what Dr. Strange had said in class about this topic. First off, I do not believe it is okay being in the 21st century for our teachers to be technologically illiterate. So many new technology advances are happening for us as teachers not to be tech literate in the classroom.
This article is basically saying it is not okay for teachers to be technologically illiterate. Mr. Fisch states that being technologically illiterate in the 21st century is like being a teacher not knowing how to read or write in the earlier times. I agree, I feel like this is a great opportunity for teachers to learn and use all the resources they can to teach. It gives different varieties to how to teach and approaches of how to teach the lesson all together. Teachers need to be technologically literate.

Social Media Count
When i first got to the link I was confused. I thought I had to press play for this movie or something to play. I realized that the numbers where raising every second. This Social Media Count was insane to me. The numbers were extremely high. I never thought about how many things were shared on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube in a matter of seconds. After seeing this count and reading the other articles for this post I know that technology is a big part of teaching already and will probably be a big part for a while. For example, students are getting MAC books for high school now. Also,some courses and programs of study are not using books anymore, and all the information is all online or they have Ebooks. This Media Count just reiterates that teachers need to be technologically literate.

A Vision of Students Today
Students today use technology everywhere they go. Whether it is in the classroom on their computers or cell phones, Ipads and netbooks technology can be brought everywhere today. For example college students who bring their computers to class are not always following along with the lecture the teachers are giving. Most of them are surfing the web or on Facebook. We are preparing for what is coming in the future, but we don't know how anything is going to be. For example, right now teachers are preparing kids for jobs in the future that don't even exist yet. Which is puzzling to me, but I guess new jobs come into existence all the time. This video really made me think about how I learn and what my goals are now, but also how things are changing so quickly and what we will experience in our lifetimes.

Presentation Project #5

C4T#1

The teacher I was assigned for my first C4T is Ms. Bayda. She is a "traveling" teacher from Saskatchewan. She travels volunteering and helping communities that need it. These volunteers help do anything from planting to cooking and also teaching. When I commented on this post I introduced myself and told her I was in EDM310 this semester. I enjoyed her post and I think it takes a special person to travel around to different countries and teach. I also told her I loved that she captured some of the activities the kids were doing and posted them on her blog as well. I think that teaching around the world would be such a learning experience, and I'm sure it is for Ms. Bayda as well. Another one of her posts was more photos and explanations about her time in Costa Rica. She met a lot of new friends from all over the world. She got to practice her Spanish with a farmer who was also a neighbor of the Ranch the volunteers were staying at. The volunteers cooked in Costa Rica also. They got to watch a local soccer team the Mastatal's Galacticos play a big game. The volunteer teachers also did fun things together like playing basketball at the community center. They also taught lessons at an elementary school there. I posted my second comment on this post. I explained how her lifestyle was a different and very interesting to me. Teaching others something and seeing them understand it for the first time is such an honor. I stated that I hope when I start teaching that I have as much success as she has been having all over the world.

Did You Know?
Watching this video I was completely surprised at the numbers and the rates that things were invented and had already made so popular within a short amount of time. I was surprised but I can see how the numbers jump so high and so quickly. The most interesting part of the video to me was at the end when it was showing how many babies were born during the video. The number of babies born all over the world within the time of the 4:56 min video was crazy to see. I could not believe it. I think this video was very interesting and was informal. It explained how fast things come into existence and how fast the next bigger and better thing can replace it. This video was made up of series of technology between years.

Mr. Winkle Wakes
This video kind of puzzled me at first. I didn't know how to explain it either, but as I began to think about it I realized this video was about how there is no technology in the school. Every where else had new up to date technology that Mr. Winkle had never seen before. All except the school, there was a small computer which was new to Mr. Winkle, but it had dust all over it. Meaning it doesn't get used very much. Mr. Winkle described school as the same he had seen in the "old" age, a hundred years before the same as he saw in today's society. I think this means with as much as technology as there is in hospitals or businesses that the children in the new generations need to be technologically literate.

Sir Ken Robinson: The Importance of Creativity
I think Sir Ken Robinson is an intelligent and funny man. He is also a great speaker. I enjoyed this movie very much. All that he said was so true, and I never thought of creativity in the terms he has. I believe that creativity is important, I think that is when children get to express themselves and have fun. If school isn't fun to them they won't want to pay attention. I love the story about the little girl painting God. It shows how kids are creative in all different ways. I agree totally with Sir Ken Robinson, when he says "mistakes are the worst thing you can make" is what we are living by and how we are teaching today. Which isn't how we should teach children and what they grow up believing. If they believe that statement then they won't want to express their creativity because they will think "well, what if this is wrong."
Academic ability should also correspond with the arts. Creativity should be involved in the "higher academic classes" such as math, science, English. For example: Dance incorporating English or spelling, or Theatre with science or math something with the arts and the other academics. Like Sir Ken Robinson says, "We will be teaching students in these generations with what we have now, but we have no idea what type of technological progression there will be by then."

Cecelia Gault (Young student in Finland) Interviews Sir Ken Robinson
It is interesting how different the rates of succession in schools are from country to country. From Finland to the U.S. there is a great deal of difference in drop out rates. Finland has a rate that's less than 1% and here in the United States we have a drop out rate of 25%. Sir Ken Robinson says "that education needs to change to meet the needs of technology of the 21st century in many ways." I believe that creativity is anything also, just like Sir Ken Robinson says in this interview. I can ensure that the Cecelia Gault's in my classroom will have many opportunities to make the best of learning and get the best education they can while in my class. I can definitely make sure that creativity is combined with all academics and give them lots of time to express themselves.

Vicki Davis: Harness Your Students' Digital Smarts
This teacher does lots of interesting things in her classroom. I agree with her when she says "With pencils and paper only certain students learn." I believe that incorporating the four types of learners makes it easier for everyone to learn and be successful together. In this video they encouraged and helped each other when it was needed. I think this is a great way of teaching and gives the students a way to learn on their own. Seeing the kids finally get something right and understand it makes the world of difference. I agree with Ms. Davis on the fact that not teaching something and letting the students figure it out by themselves gives them a sense of ownership and power.

Blog Assignment #1

My name is Kimberly Lefferson. I was born in St. Petersburg, FL, January 7, 1991. A month later my family and I moved to Miami, FL. In 1997 my brother was born.  We lived in Miami for about ten years. Then we moved to Ocean Springs, Mississippi for my dad’s job.  When we moved to Mississippi I got into swimming competitively. I swam for USA swimming and also my school. I graduated form Ocean Springs High School in 2009.  

I decided to attend University of South Alabama because it was close enough to home, but also far enough away to live on my own.  I was originally going into pre-med to be a radiologist. I have always wanted to be a teacher though, so I made up my mind to go into education. I have decided elementary education was what would make for a job that would make me happy and excited to go to work!  

I really enjoyed the video on Time Management.  It is so true about procrastination being a hard habit to break.  I have learned to manage my time pretty well since starting college, or at least I think so.  I think this video is very useful and effective to think about especially when starting this class and seeing how much there is to do.
